5 Steps I Learned to Start My Blog

Starting a blog is easy. With a computer connected to the Internet, it will take you about 5 minutes to create a blog. However, I’m sure that you took a lot of time to know “how to start a blog”. I did.

I’m sure no one can be right from the beginning. Only after obtaining the knowledge and experience can we do everything better.

Darren Rowse wasn’t a professional blogger 10 years ago. And he wouldn’t have been able to write these best selling e-books (31 Days to Build a Better Blog, ProBlogger’s Guide to Blogging for Your Business, The Blogger’s Guide to Online Marketing, Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income and ProBlogger’s Guide to your First Week of Blogging) if he hadn’t had the blogging experience for 10 years.

I can start a blog easily now not because I’m better than you. I did it a lot before. And so I got enough knowledge and experience to start a blog earlier than you.

Now I’m here to share with you things I learned to start a blog to help you get the same results easily and fast.

What things did I Learn to Start a Blog?

Please note that you do not need to have the following things to start a blog. You can have a blog without these things but … if you want to build a professional blog, you should have them. So what’s that, exactly?

1. Choose Something to Blog About: That’s the first thing we should determine if we want to start a blog. This step is called “choose niche blog”.

Although we can post everything on a blog, we shouldn’t do that. It’s better to focus on one or two things we love on a blog. Why?

Readers will realize what we want to share with them on the blog easily. This will make them focus more on our blog. They will remember and come back when they want to find the same topic.

Besides, if we just blog about one or two thing, our blog will get high ranking on search result of the search engines (if you knew SEO is important for any site, I think you wouldn’t ignore this step).

2. Choosing a Domain Name: A domain name is the first thing to make our readers realize what we want to talk about on our blog. It is the first thing that people remember about a website as remembering the name of a person (it is our blog brand). Having a right domain name also helps our blog SEO better. Thus, choose a domain name is the thing that we shouldn’t ignore.

3. Choosing a Blog Platform: This step is important because a blog platform is a companion with you along the way when you become a blogger.

There are many blog platforms to start a blog. You should determine the best blog platform that suits your capabilities and needs.

If you choose a blog platform that can’t give the function you need, you’ll fail to fulfill your plan. And if you choose a blog platform that has too many features or surpasses your control ability, you’ll waste lots of time to learn how to use all features. It is also not reasonable.

When you are able to take control of your blog, you’ll make it work better for your purposes. So you should learn about the blogging platform to find out which is your best horse.

Personally I would recommend you use “stand alone blog platforms” such as WordPress, Drupal or Joomla (I will tell you why I recommend it in other blog post).

4. Choosing Web Hosting: Hosting is one of the two things you need to possess right after getting a domain name. This is the place to store all of your blog data. A good Webhosting will fasten your blog speed. That’s why Webhosting plays an important role in the development and evaluation of readers about your blog in the future.

To choose a right Web Hosting for yourself, you need to determine which requirements Web Hosting should have to build your blog, such as space storage, minimum bandwidth, the support programming languages etc…

5. Choosing blog design: What is the first thing that impresses you when visiting a blog?
It’s blog interface (I know you’ll answer it right)

Everybody looks different because each person has a unique look. Your blog interface differentiates you from other bloggers. So choose a unique blog interface and identify yourself – build your blog brand.
